Who among us hasn’t imagined, even for the length of a film, living in that chivalrous and incredible era that is the Middle Ages?
A source of inspiration for several cinematic masterpieces, from Joan of Arc to Robin Hood, the medieval age is that captivating period in history where throne, county, and religious wars shaped France into the country we know today.
Awarded to 190 French cities by the Ministry of Culture, this label has been recognizing Guérande since 2004, showcasing the cultural and historical richness of the city and its dedication to bringing it to life. For over 20 years, the town has been attracting an ever-growing audience with this ambitious event, now renowned and celebrated as the Guérande Medieval Festival. For one weekend, 500 costumed volunteers and no fewer than 2,000 participants, organizers, and visitors, transport you back to the 14th and 15th centuries.
The historical context of this era was relatively unstable and tumultuous, notably due to the Hundred Years’ War between the King of France and the King of England. Guérande was then a city with a powerful aura, and it was in the Saint-Aubin Collegiate Church that the Breton War of Succession ended with the signing of the Treaty of Guérande. This treaty defined the city as the diplomatic capital of the Duchy, ushering in a few years of peace and prosperity.
Comparable to Puy du Fou in its execution, the dedication of passionate volunteers transports you throughout the event. The experience is undeniable: the Guérande Medieval Festival is a success, and visiting the region without attending it would be unthinkable!
The city transforms completely to host ancient crafts, street performances, camps, and artisan markets. The event kicks off on Saturday morning, and by lunchtime, you’ll find various taverns to dine in. Musicians, dancers, acrobats, and knights animate your day until evening, when the banquet evolves into a medieval ball, blending dance, musical jousts, acrobatics, and fire shows!
The second day features the magnificent and eagerly awaited costumed parade. It’s one of the festival’s highlights, and to get into character, the organizers offer costume rentals (available at the Kerbiniou Sports Complex, with information from the Guérande City Hall). Sword fights, juggling, and traditional workshops lead you to the equestrian tournament, where the bravest knights, portrayed by professional stuntmen, compete for honor and victory.
Getting to Loire-Atlantique is very easy thanks to its efficient and free road network. However, finding accommodation during this time of year can be part of the adventure! It’s recommended for those seeking pleasant lodging to plan ahead and avoid last-minute offers. Many establishments, including hotels, guesthouses, and campsites, are fully booked during these dates.
The Domaine de Léveno, whose official website you are visiting, is located in Guérande itself. Ideally situated on the outskirts of the city, it provides a prime location to enjoy this unmissable event. The site offers campsites for motorhomes and caravans, unique accommodations (teepees, double teepees, treehouses), as well as modern and comfortable mobile home rentals that can host between 4 and 12 people! Just a few minutes by bike from the city center, each rental includes a parking space and access to the campsite’s impressive facilities, including the giant water park, slides, and various recreational areas.
